Wall lights with style

Creating comfort with the right light

When designing a space with light you can't go past adding in wall lights to add atmosphere and interest. The importance of washing light on to walls rather than straight down onto the floor is what we try to encourage in a lot of our designs. Reflected or indirect light is all about the comfort we can achieve when we don't fill the entire area with light, just where we need it. LED downlights still play a large role in our lighting designs, but we get more creative where we can illuminating surfaces with wall lights as well as surface mounted LED downlights, recessed step lights and LED strip lighting. We also love floor lamps and table lamps to again add that mood and illuminance into a space.

Uplighting ceilings & walls

1. Vespa Wall Light                                                     2. Kinetic Surface Mounted Downlight                   3. Axis Surface Mounted Downlight
1. The Vespa Wall Light is the perfect uplighter to highlight walls and ceilings creating  a wide even wash to reflect light into an area. Popular in architectural homes because of its minimalist styling, the warm white LED provides a feeling of comfort and ambience into bedrooms and living rooms.

2. The Kintetic Surface Mounted Downlight is one of our favourite versatile lights as it can utilised as an architectural LED downlight or a wall light. The lower portion angles out to 90 degrees and then for even more flexibility it can rotate 350 degrees, which is superb on angled ceilings.

3. The Axis Surface Mounted Downlight is IP65 rated which makes it fit into almost any situation, inside or out. The 26W version of this light is a little bulky but with a wide beam angle can reach some pretty high pitched ceilings. Our 15W Axis light is probably the best seller as it packs a great light output in a sleek designed body.

How to install low voltage outdoor garden lighting

7/2/2018

by LED Outdoor

Well done, you've made the effort to learn how to install your garden lights properly. It's not rocket science but it will take a bit of patience especially if you haven't done much soldering before. If you are unsure try and get someone who is confident to either show you or help you out.  A good landscaper or qualified electrician may seem costly in the scheme of things at the beginning, but the pain it can cause you in the long run if water seeps in to your wiring will hurt your pocket more.

Installation Guide
Professional Low-Voltage Wiring

Important Information
Please follow instructions carefully. Failure to do so will void warranty. Please ensure installation complies with local law and applicable standards.
  1. Only use a LED Outdoor 24V DC power supply (driver).
  2. Ensure mains input power is surge protected.
  3. Never make connections whilst the power is connected.
  4. Do not make modifications or alter the product.
  5. Keep luminaire clean and free of debris.
  6. Take extreme care when using an open flame outdoors.

Required Equipment
Picture

- Soldering Iron or Butane Gas Torch
- Hot-Air Gun or Butane Gas Torch
- Solder
- Wire Cutters
- Heat shrink Tube(Resin Filled)
- Heat shrink Caps
- Scissors

Installation Process

STEP 1.
Cut the feed cable where light it to be installed. Strip PVC insulation to expose copper strands.
Picture
STEP 2.
Fan out strands then twist all the red cables together tightly followed by all the black cables, keeping the shoulders of the PVC insulation level.
Picture
Step 3
Using a butane gas torch (or soldering iron) - heat the twisted strands and apply enough solder to get right into the middle of the strands. Trim the end with wire cutters and be careful to remove sharp edges.
Picture
Step 4
Place shrink cap over the connection ensuring a third of its length is covering the cable insulation. Carefully apply heat using a blow torch or heat gun to seal the connection from moisture. Be careful not to burn the rubber - this process takes time and should not be rushed. The cap will collapse around the connection and you will notice black adhesive seep from the bottom when complete.
Picture
Step 5
Place glue lined heat shrink tubing over the whole connection. Ensure the tube covers the outer insulation of both the light fitting cable and the feed cable. Gently heat allowing the tube to collapse tightly around the connection leaving no gaps. With your pliers squeeze the end of the tube to seal and allow to cool.

1. FIREFLY SPIKE LIGHT
Picture
Once you've seen this little guy in action you'll be using them in all your designs. Well priced, reliable, discreet and so versatile. Uplight trees to around 2.5m H, low shrubs, decorative screens, wash low along paths, uplight walls with garden bed in front.

Picture
2. ASTRO STEP LIGHT
Picture
Surface mounted, this compact and slimline wall light really creates an impact. The 24V connection allows easy cable installation into garden beds for retaining walls like shown above. Also perfect for the side walls of stairs, on pillars, above entry intercoms and low walls.

3. SOPHIA PATH LIGHT
Picture
These photos just capture perfectly how effective the Sophia path light is. Easily hidden amongst plants, especially hedging, so that all you really see is the effect of the light. One 24V DC driver can run a multitude of lights, so where practical it's nice to create repetition with lighting to emphasise length.

4. ZERON MINI WALL LIGHTS
Picture
Picture
Clean, minimalistic and versatile is how we best describe the Zeron Mini's. We get these fittings made in 24V and 240V so they can suit a range of applications. Think garage and exterior wall lights, post or pillar lights, alfresco rooms or contemporary open framed structures made from timber or steel.

5. AXIS SPOT LIGHT - 240V
Picture
Looking for a clean and modern spot light that can really light the way? These Axis lights have an incredible output that will have you incorporating them into every design. The smooth rotation point allows this to be wall or ceiling mounted, and the 3 various wattages give you the flexibility to bring them internally as well as externally. This is a fitting that needs to be touched and played with to appreciate how good they really are so please come in and see us at our Kent Town Showroom sometime soon!

6. KEO HORIZON INGROUND LIGHT
Picture
Looking for a point of difference to highlight a deck or path? The Keo Horizon's create little to no glare and add interest to areas where standard in-ground lights would have previously been used. Really effective in paved stepping stones, along driveways, stair treads, decking and path ways. Available in one direction or two directions as shown in picture.

Spruce up your garden for Xmas!

by LED Outdoor

Have you got your "TO DO LIST" in full swing? Then it's time to look outside to see what can be done to help get the most enjoyment out of your garden when entertaining this year with friends and family.

See our helpful tips below on
  • Repositioning your lights
  • Cleaning up your fittings
  • Lights not working?
  • Adding in some extra light

Picture
Reposition lights
Uplighting feature trees and plants throughout the garden looks nothing short of spectacular. Sometimes though when lighting is first put into a garden the plants can be young and on the smaller side. As our garden matures branches on under plantings can take over and lights can be lost so it's really important to have a good look and see if the lights can be repositioned to recreate the magic that was originally intended. The low voltage garden spike lights are designed with a spike and Allen key brackets which allows for adjusting. If you need an extension rod to raise the fitting up above lower plantings like hedges or agapanthus we also have these available and can be done without any rewiring.

Don't be afraid to play around with them!

Clean up fittings
Picture
Along with getting out the blower and doing a bit of trimming, give your outdoor lighting a bit of a clean up by washing the lenses with a bit of warm water and a soft scourer if they are as bad as the picture here. It's a quick job but this will really enhance the impact of your garden lighting as many people forget about their lights and then wonder why they're not doing what they COULD be doing.

Lights not working?
From time to time the odd light fails which is sometimes due to poor installation, globes coming out of the lamp holder or sometimes water has seeped in. This is the time when small repairs can be squeezed in to revitalise the garden and tick another thing off the list! If you have a fitting with a globe, check that it hasn't come loose as this can often be the case for these types of fittings. If its a dedicated LED fitting then more than likely water has somehow seeped into the fitting so this may be a good time to come in and see what we can offer.

Adding in extra lights
As our gardens develop sometimes the need for extra lighting may become apparent. Maybe you've added some extra plants or a sculpture, you've noticed an area that seems a bit dim, or maybe a tree has grown quite large and may need some extra lighting to create more of an effect. We would love to assist you in providing those finishing touches to your garden, check out our gallery and products pages for inspiration.

Don't forget we also do internal lighting now with a great range of architectural wall lights and downlights along with modern spot lights all suitable for seaside and urban applications, inside and out!

How to choose the right lighting for your alfresco

22/9/2017

by LED Outdoor

If your building or have built a new home in the past 5 years its more than likely that you will have an outdoor room or alfresco area attached to your house. Australians love the outdoors, but with our ever changing weather conditions having a space that protects us from the elements allows us to enjoy our homes and gardens that much more.

So when it comes to lighting your Outdoor room what are your options? Let us break it down for you to what's available and how to best use them.
Picture
Downlights
Picture
Recessed downlights are commonly used on gyprock ceilings to keep the consistency with the interior of the home. Clean and practical, choose fittings  like our Apex or Titanium downlights that can be dimmed to create a lovely ambience which is really important in these more relaxing areas of your home.

Surface mounted downlights are great for alfresco areas, BBQ areas and pergolas where lighting can not be recessed like on beams or facias. Fittings like our new 7W Onyx (pictured below) allow the body of the fitting to be angled and provide better light into areas with raked ceilings or on the sides of beams. Downlights with a fixed canister (pictured on the left) are handy for lighting where ceiling are solid timber on concrete - areas where cabling has been wired for but the light cannot actually be recessed in to. These are a popular choice to due to the improved energy efficiency as you don't need to disturb the insulation in the roof.

Spotlights
Spotlights I find can cover quite a broad range of light fittings. Basically if its not a flood light and it creates “a spot of light” it can be called a spotlight. Spotlights are very commonly used in outdoor rooms, pergolas, balinese huts, over BBQ areas and around alfresco areas due to their size and practicality. Our two favourite fittings for these applications are our Onyx 7W adjustable spotlight and our Axis 7W adjustable spotlight. They both offer great light output, great modern look and easy installation, just that the Axis is a bit of a wider spot and a bit of bigger fitting overall. *Ask us about the various options available in the Axis - truely an awesome fitting!

Picture
Floodlights
LED flood lights all look pretty much the same, but the difference comes into play through the quality of the LED chip used, the quality of the driver inside the fitting, and the overall quality of the materials used to manufacture the light. Depending on the area trying to be lit, flood lights are better off kept out of alfresco areas unless the space is very high or it is being used as reflected light. By this we mean aiming the fitting upwards and washing the light up onto the ceiling so that the light is “reflected” off the surface to give a general wash of light without any glare.
For homes looking to create reflected light in an entertaining area with a colourbond or by-rock ceiling try our Vespa LED wall light.

Wall Lights
Picture
Wall lights are a great addition into alfresco areas as they provide indirect lighting that adds ambiance into a space. Most people are aware of the typical cylindrical  "up/down" wall lights but there are some other great alternatives that we offer that compliment a range of both new and classic exteriors. The best way to use wall lights is to have them as a secondary light source in your alfresco area. We always try to design rooms with some direct overhead lighting that can be turned on/off separately to the wall lights and garden lights. This flexibility can be easily created with the use of remote controls or if using an electrician switched back into the home.
Picture
Hopefully that gives you a bit of an insight as to the types of lights out there. For further assistance don't hesitate to contact us to get personalised help from Troy or myself.

Love your outdoors!

The Firefly garden uplights are by far our most popular fitting due to their versatility and compact modern design. TREES up to 5mtrs - LOTUS 5W Uplight
The Lotus garden uplight is a great step up for a bit more impact or where you require a bit more spread of light to a canopy. The short body is very discreet in the garden, and like our Firefly and Willow spike lights you also have the option of adding in an extension pole of 300mm or 600mm to raise above any underplanting.
  • Forest Pansy
  • Palm trees
  • Pencil Pines
  • Crepe Myrtles
  • Hedging plants

TREES up to 15mtrs - WILLOW 11.5W Uplight I KARRI 20W Spot Light
Large trees are commonly where people get the most lost with lighting. Its often a balance of a couple of lights, sometimes with various beam spreads  that will achieve the right effect. Our Willow spike light is very compact for the punch it delivers and is most suitable for palm trees, jacarandas, willows, and gum trees.

A Brighter Outlook!

As we set off into Spring the gardens around us are just bursting with new life and its a real pleasure to look out the window. The trend of large expanses of glass around our homes allows us to connect with the outside world, but what happens when the sun sets and the garden disappears?

Outdoor lighting provides the key to expanding your living and enjoying these spaces even after dark. Create a beautiful, natural piece of artwork that will allow you to entertain or relax in whilst also offering safety and security. It doesn't take much to enhance your garden, a mixture of low lighting and uplighting balanced out within the area provides a wonderful ambience that sets the mood.
Picture

Be Creative!

Inground lights like our 2W or 3W Keo's look fabulous in decking, pathways and against walls like the picture above. Up lit trees always look amazing showcasing the texture of trunks and foilage, whilst path lights create an ambient glow that is unobtrusive and provides safety. Don't think that path lighting just has to be in the form of bollards, our KEO Horizons deliver a creative alternative to highlighting driveways, paths and stepping stones.

What about colour?

Our gardens are naturally filled with colour and texture so 90% of the time we solely design with warm white LED fittings. Occasionally when clients are looking for a bit of extra character incorporating colour can bring in an exciting twist and vibrancy. Colour doesn't need to be in your face, with our easy to use remote control units  fittings can be adjusted to allow for control of brightness as well as colour changing sequences.

Areas where colour can be very effective include:
  • behind laser cut screens
  • water features
  • decking - single colour rather than colour changing
  • outdoor bars

Why is colour temperature so important in indoor and outdoor lighting?

26/6/2016

by LED Outdoor

Warm white, Cool white, Neutral white??   .......Are you confused?

Unless you are into photography or specialised lighting the concept of colour temperature can be quite foreign. Basically every light emits a different colour of white. Halogens are often referred to as yellow light whereas fluro's have traditionally been a bluer light. If the light has a yellow hue we call it warm white but if it's more blue then we refer to it as cool white. Pure white is then referred to as Neutral white.

The great thing about LED lighting is the luxury of being able to choose the colour temperature you desire when purchasing. At LED Outdoor we strongly believe in using light to enhance the environment you are in. Since we focus on lighting to be used at nighttime - whether it's in your garden or your kitchen -  we always recommend Warm white. Not any type of Warm white though - we love what is called 3000K on the temperature scale. We find this a really good balance of being warm but not too yellow.
LED Strip lighting under outdoor steps
Warm White LED Strip lighting under the outdoor steps. Inside Cool White LED's add an unpleasant blue hue to the bedrooms.
Picture
Way too often we see builders and clients choosing cool white in their houses because it is brighter. Yes, this is the case, but Cool white is like the sun, so when you see this cool light at night time your brain thinks it should be awake. This is why hospitals, schools and office buildings commonly use Cool white for their lighting but is this what you want at home?
We believe your home and garden should be a place to relax and unwind from the grind of daily life. Warm light from your LED's helps you to achieve this. As humans warm light is more natural as history shows us relying on wood fires and candles at night time.
Picture
Within the house the Cool White down lights are harsh and unwelcoming. Whereas the garden provides a much softer ambience.

Don't think warm light still can't be bright. In our own home we have just installed the Titanium 15W Down lights in Warm White 3000K and the quality of light through our Kitchen is amazing. It's comforting on the eye, yet there is still not a detail we would miss. Remember where possible add a dimmer to your indoor or patio lights. We love being able to turn ours down when we are entertaining or just want to relax.

For outdoor garden lighting we also love 3000K as it gives warmth while still highlighting the natural colours of the vegetation. At night, to the eye it looks vibrant and not at all yellow.

If you need any help with lighting design please don't hesitate to contact us here and feel free to leave your thoughts below!

Cheers,
Troy Merchant

Looking for a modern, eco-friendly heating solution that will warm your home this winter? Look no further than our range of EcoSmart, Icon & Cocoon fire places suitable for indoors and outdoors fuelled by bioethanol fuel. NO flue, NO Chimney, NO electrician required

What is Bioethanol?

Bioethanol is like Methylated Spirits, it's a plant based renewable energy fuel created by the fermentation of plant by-products like sugar cane, potatoes, bananas and grain. It is classed as easily biodegradable and when it burns the residual emission is carbon dioxide and water steam which is absorbed by plants.

Today, bioethanol has many uses including the transport industry and manufacturing, and in our fires it creates a beautiful clean dancing flame.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Questions & Answers courtesy of EcoSmart Fires website
Are they easy to install?
EcoSmart™ Fires are designed to be easy to operate and easy to install. Without the need for a flue or pipe connection, EcoSmart™ Fires are extremely flexible and can be incorporated at any stage of your interior decorating, renovating or building works. For detailed specifications please contact your local distributor.

Where can I buy the fuel from?
We sell the E-NRG recommended fuel at LED Outdoor in Adelaide

How much does it cost to run?
The cost of 1 litre of Bio Ethanol varies depending on place and quantity of purchase. On average you look at AU $3.85* per litre so if you are running your fire on medium and on 2 litres, this is a cost equivalent to having a couple of cappuccinos each evening! (*Price subject to change)

Does the bioethanol smell?
Bio ethanol has substances added to it in order for it to be labeled de-natured. The burning of these substances may cause a slight smell upon initial lighting and will dissipate with time. There is also a slight smell once the flame is extinguished – similar to when you blow out a candle. The smell will soon dissipate into the air.

How long will it burn for?
In general 5 Litres of Bio Ethanol would last from 7 hours on MAX and up to 20 hours on MIN setting.

Can I use my existing fireplace?
The Burner & Renovator Range can be installed once the flue has been closed off and all connections to utilities have been officially disconnected by the relevant suppliers. It is also important that the connections have been isolated & comply with minimum clearance zones.

"I had been looking for outdoors lights for our wedding reception venue for a while, and I kept come back to LED Outdoor. As we are located in the Hunter Valley, I thought surely there was someone local who could provide the same product. I eventually gave up my search, and rang Troy at LED Outdoor. His customer service, knowledge and advice has been incredible. The lights arrived in 48 hours (which in itself was incredible!), were installed easily by our electricians and look absolutely amazing. I would not go anywhere else in future. The lighting has taken the presentation of our property to another level. Thanks Troy!"
