A well designed home reflects the personality of its owners, taking into consideration how spaces should make the occupants feel and relate to their surroundings. In a recent project with directors Melissa and Rowan from Mosmo Living we explored a variety of lighting techniques that provide functional, ambient and feature lighting to set the scene for whatever the occasion. The modern high pitched ceilings invite plenty of natural light into the living spaces, whilst the pastel colour palette provides a relaxed and sophisticated vibe. Trying to keep the ceilings clean of downlights was the main focus of our lighting design, especially considering the height and angle. Reflected lighting through the use of wall lights and hidden LED strip lights enabled us to offer plenty of ambient light whilst a few selected pendants were utilised to offer task lighting over the bench and tables. The Unios FX 48V Track Light suspended over the island bench is very much on trend at the moment with an array of fixtures to choose from. One of our favourites is the darklighter module which creates the most incredible task lighting with absolutely no glare. The addition of the small spotlights on the end only add to its flexibility and aesthetics. To really capture the beauty of the racked ceiling we used the Arkos Lip Wall Uplights. Arkos is a well renowned lighting brand designing and manufacturing in Barcelona. In this Mosmo Living display home we loved the curves of the Lip Wall Light which kept with the softer edges of the custom designed table and kitchen bench. The wall lights flow from inside through to the outdoor entertaining area creating a feeling of one larger area. The Musa wall light (pictured above) also plays on the curves and softness that the designers have reinforced throughout the home. Two of these wall lights were plenty of light to illuminate the stairwell and connecting hallway, again removing the need for downlights and enhancing the decor of the home. In the bedrooms and bathrooms our flexible and dotless Luna Mini LED strip accentuates the joinery detail, offering interest and ambient light to soften the space. Our Orb ball wall lights are a huge hit also a radiant bedside light. Our simple and discrete Titanium Starlight provides a soft wash down the beautiful feature tiles. These are the perfect lighting solution for your shower providing just the right amount of indirect light as well as having the ability to highlight feature titles. How much do you love this Duo Ceiling Light by Vibia! We are completely smitten. Its organic shape and gorgeous real oak timber interior make this light a feature when it's on or off. This light is on display in our Kent Town showroom so come and treat yourself and see what other goodies we can enlighten you with :-P

SA's Landscapers stepping it up at the Master Builders SA Home ShowThis years Home Show was turned up a gear with the Master Landscapers Association putting out a call to see who could create the best display. Four incredible teams including Yardstick, Distinctive Gardens, Elite Outdoor Designs and SA Waterscapes brought some innovative and inspiring designs to the table that had us all very excited about the future of this industry. The judging panel was made up of experts from within MLSA, as well as the SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, the Nursery Industry of SA and SA Life’s expert, Kym Syrus. ![]() The teams had 48 hours to put together their displays in a space of 6m x 4m, and then it was left to the judges to make their decision. A night shoot was also requested by the participants to allow them to showcase how effective and important lighting is to the overall design. As you can see from the following images, the detail that has gone into each and every one of these designs shows just how creative and committed these talented professionals are. So proud to be part of this industry. The winning garden was awarded to Distinctive Gardens! Rob Cooper, Director of Distinctive Gardens, designed a modern and vibrant garden, structured around the central commission art work. The outdoor kitchen and hand-made pink pots almost steal the show! Featured in this space is our Willow spike spotlight highlighting the Dragon Tree, our Halo strip light for the back artwork, and the Axis surface mounted downlights in the timber ceiling. This tropical oasis by Yardstick Landscape Services brings together the raw beauty of timber, the polished look of tiles and a designer water feature, as well as a painted mural created by the talented Peter Adley, Director of Yardstick. Featured in this space are our Luna Flex Mini strip lighting, Dory pond lights, and our Firefly spike spotlights that have been used for uplighting in amongst the greenery. This stunning design by Elite Outdoor Design screams entertainer's delight to us! With a relaxed seating area perched upon the decking, and a custom concrete bench along the pond, we could just imagine putting the feet up with a bottle of wine after a long day. This display has made use of our Halo strip lighting, our Keo inground lights, as well as our Firefly spike spotlight. The Master Landscapers of SA display is a relaxing and zen space, with large boulder features and our Florence Festoon lightstwinkling above from the timber arbor. This space carries the calming energy you desire after a long day at work, and want to relax into your garden. Some more of our lighting featured here are our Lotus spike spotlights, and our Willow spike spotlights. Designed by Nikki King, Director of Nikki King Landscape Design.

Exploring new opportunities in track lighting....Track lighting can be the answer to limited wiring or greater flexibility in design layouts, but until now it has also been a bulky fixture that stands out in a space. With a strong focus on R&D, Unios has brought to the market a slim line 48V track light system that allows you to safely run it along ceilings and down walls with elegance. Offering flush, suspended or surface mounted installation, the magnetic profile can house any arrangement of fixtures from wall washers, diffused lineal lights, decorative fixtures as well as miniature to medium scaled spotlights. The track located in our showroom aims to emphasise the importance of functional task lighting with a point of difference. The uniqueness that Unios has brought into this range, which separates it from other luminaries, are the track’s ‘dark lights’. The dark lights offer a comfortable, non-intrusive task light with absolutely no glare. In fact you can’t even tell where the light is coming from! These dark lights are optimal for over bench lighting, kitchens and office spaces where task lighting is key. The FX series offers a number of configurations in miniature, compact sizing. Proving just as effective as larger sized lights, the FX series is minimal, discreet and powerful. Come into our showroom and have a look for yourself, we have it displayed over our major working bench and we are more than happy to show you the reasons why we love this range so much! by

On the fringe of Adelaide’s CBD, North Adelaide is an envious suburb that is rich with beautiful historic buildings, many on which have good size allotments and gorgeous mature trees. For most young professionals entering into this area, a contemporary home is not a common find, but for these clients the opportunity to build at the rear of an established home was a dream come true.
Our Tourmaline wall lights are a firm favourite and have been utilised here to graze light against the walls in the living room and down the hallways. The feature Heat Pendant over the table has been lovingly nick named "the sponge” and compliments perfectly the textural detailing of the grey brickwork selected for the hallways. Downlights do have their place, and in this house we’ve positioned them accordingly in the Bathroom and Bedrooms to provide a functional purpose, but many people overlook other ways of lighting an area as they are uneducated to the possibilities.
We hope this home inspires you to look outside the box and consider lighting as an important element to truely making your home feel like home. Our staff are here to help with lighting design concepts and are passionate about getting it right for your lifestyle. by

After undergoing a huge $20 million renovation, the Marion Hotel has been transformed into the new place to be! Boasting 62 accommodation rooms, a new outdoor garden area, bars, function rooms, a drive through bottle shop and expansive dining, the hotel has truly upped it’s game, and set the bar very high indeed. Designed by Studio Nine Architects and featuring interior styling by Fluer Linke from Surround Interiors, the owners of the hotel have described the new style as “industrial chic meets luxury”. Feature lighting selected by the owners has been paired with the clean lines of our architectural lights, balancing out the spaces with a mixture of ambient and task lighting. Our Luna Flex LED Strip Lighting was utilised extensively throughout the bars for its consistent dotless illumination and its ability to fit neatly into small spaces. Completely dimmable, the warmth of the 2700K Luna Flex cues the mind and body towards relaxation, and so has become quite popular amongst designers working in hospitality and entertainment venues. The large feature balls suspended in the tree of the beer garden add a lovely whimsical feel and draw your eye in and around to capture the whole space. Our Florence Festoon LED Lighting creates the perfect ambience in the new light-filled function room, which caters for weddings, celebrations and the ever popular yoga classes. Once again, these lights are dimmable and customisable, crafted with polycarbonate 1W LED globes that are commercially rated for safety and exposed outdoor applications. Adding a bit of drama, the Moonstone Wall Lights (Image below) accentuate the repetition of the timber detailing, creating quite a striking effect. Our all-black Switch Downlights are located in many of the new rooms, complementing the dark ceilings beautifully, whilst also offering complete flexibility through the ability to tilt and rotate to any chosen angle. Installation was professionally completed by “Lumpy” and his boys at Contect Electrical, who are renowned for their quality workmanship. With the good news here in SA that our hospitality venues are once again opening the doors as restrictions surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic are eased, it’s well worth adding the Marion Hotel to your bucket list of venues to visit in the near future. Check out their Instagram feed @marionhotel for more information on this revamped hot spot.

Just 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD lies the historic and picturesque German township of Hahndorf. A popular tourism destination and home to some of South Australia's best loved wineries, Hahndorf expresses a rich history of quality and craftsmanship. The new Sidewood Estate cellar door and restaurant is no exception to this, as it has built up a remarkable reputation through its premium cider and wine ranges. Connecting the landscapeContrast of light and dark plays a big part in stimulating our senses, and by combining a variety of our steps lights, garden spike lights, strip lighting, festoon lighting and bollard lighting we were able to produce a cohesive design that connected the surrounding landscaped gardens to the main building. The feature gum in the decked outdoor balcony has been wrapped in our commercial grade fairy light system called Twinkly. It can be controlled via a free app through any smart phone device to not only change colour, but custom design any pattern they wish. The black step lights mounted to each pole under the railing (picture below) are our own Saffire step lights. Simple and discreet they create quite an impact for only 1W. The stairs are illuminated by washing light out over the step, not up into your eyes. The Keo Horizon step lights do a great job of this, and are impact resistant meaning they could even be driven over! Our little Quartz hardscape lights show the way down the lush green croquet lawns, and our IP68 weatherproof Halo Strip Lighting is under mounted into the handrails at the entry to lead and welcome you to the estate. For a more romantic and fun vibe our own Florence Festoon lights can be seen draped across the back verandah, adding warmth and visual interest. Interior Lighting - Relax and stay a whileWarm white lighting is a key element in softening a space to induce relaxation and comfort. Venues like cellar doors, wineries, restaurants, wedding venues and the likes are there to invite you in and encourage you to experience what they have to offer. Downlights are generally the go-to for many people, but as you can see from the photo's we've taken here at Sidewood, wall lights, pendant lights, recessed step lights and strip lighting all offer interest and ambience whilst also adding a sense of character and purpose. Utilising reflected lighting and fittings with lateral spread ensures balance and ambience. When working with exposed rafters or beams, track lighting offers a practical solution, especially for hospitality venues. The flexibility of being able to move fixtures, add on more lights and manipulate the angles of the lights really allows the space to adapt for various uses and functions.

Summer is a busy time of the year when there is an abundant number of great looking homes on the market. For those properties looking for top dollar it's not unusual for a stylist to come through and stage the home, but have you considered how much of an impact garden lighting can make to a place? We live in the Adelaide Hills and we love looking at properties. Online the images are what capture you first and you can really sell yourself on a property through those photos before you even enter the front door. Many real estate agents aren't just selling you "a house" they are selling you a lifestyle. Creating a welcoming home that feels safe through the use of well positioned lights offers a sense of relaxation and allows the surrounding landscape to be taken in with the home. Lighting up features alongs the edges of the boundary will help open up a space, and low level lighting washing over or along the ground will create balance to the eye and assist with a feeling of security. Useful areas to add in some light:
What lights do I choose* Getting cable access to the far side of a driveway may not be an easy process. Sometimes it may be possible to gain access from the garage. Is garden lighting expensive? As with all property investing it's about getting the right balance between adding value to your home whilst not over capitalising. If you're feeling handy it is possible to save some money through the installation process by doing it yourself. If choosing this option we do suggest you be considerate to the next homeowner and detail where cabling is running and where they can find the driver. If getting in a trades person maybe leave the next owners the details of who has installed the lights as if something does go wrong or more needs to be added, it can be done with least amount of hassle.
The important thing is that if you don't have any lighting currently in your garden you don't need to go over board. All homes will already have their front door lit so it's just a matter of focusing on a few key points as mentioned above that will create the most impact. If you find yourself stumped of where to start please get in contact with us to guide you through the process. by
